Whether or not microplastics have harmful effects on plants and animals has not yet been conclusively established. The different properties of microplastics determine whether and how the microplastics are absorbed by living organisms and whether they are harmful to them.

Compared to other pollutants in the environment (e.g. pesticides), microplastics do not have a uniform effect on living organisms. In addition, the effects of microplastics often cannot be distinguished from the harmful effects of other particles and substances found in the environment.

Microplastics are small particles of plastic less than 5mm in size; nanoplastics are even smaller, ranging from 1 to 100 nanometres (N.B. 1 nanometre equals one-millionth of a millimetre).

In 2016, EFSA identified the need to generate more data on their occurrence levels in food and on their potential effects on human health following exposure. Recently, international reports on microplastics and nanoplastics have been published, yet many of the food safety aspects remain unaddressed.

Public concern about this topic is high. EFSA’s 2019 Eurobarometer on Food Safety in the EU found that microplastics in food was a topic of increasing concern among EU citizens.

Therefore, EFSA is holding a scientific colloquium with the following objectives:

bringing stakeholders together,
understanding the current state of play and ongoing research on this topic
building possible synergies,

The colloquium will take place online on 6 and 7 May 2021.

The Special Issue on “Plastic Contamination: Challenges and Solutions” focus on addressing all aspects of plastics

Plastics are popular synthetic materials due to their advantageous properties, such as low density and high durability, which have led to their increased use in multiple applications. Either in larger or smaller sizes, known as microplastics and nanoplastics, plastics are continuously released to the environment, where they accumulate due to their resistance to degradation. For this reason, plastics now contaminate virtually every ecosystem on the planet, being considered a marker for the Anthropocene. The accumulation of plastics in the environment can have negative effects on organisms and ecosystems directly through toxicity, or indirectly through habitat changes. Most of this contamination originates from an unsustainable use and management of plastics, from production to consumption and disposal, which needs to be restructured in the context of a circular economy.

This Special Issue invites novel contributions in the form of critical reviews and research papers to address all aspects of plastics, such as: (i) strategies or technologies to improve the production, use, and waste management of plastics; (ii) analytical methods for the assessment of micro/nanoplastics; (iii) concentrations and characteristics of micro/nanoplastics in the environment; (iv) ecotoxicological or abiotic effects of micro/nanoplastics; (v) the role of micro/nanoplastics as vectors of contaminants and pathogens. This Special Issue also welcomes contributions regarding changes in plastics policies, consumption, incorrect disposal, and waste management during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Special Issue on “Plastic Contamination: Challenges and Solutions” focus on addressing all aspects of plastics.

The deadline for manuscript submission is 1 April 2021. You may send your manuscript now or up until the deadline. Submitted papers should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. We also encourage authors to send a short abstract or tentative title to the Editorial Office in advance (environments@mdpi.com or lucine.lin@mdpi.com).

Environments is committed in rapid publication. The time from submission to first decision is 18.2 days; from acceptance to publication is 5.9 days; from submission to publication is 40 days in 2019.

Environments is fully open access indexed in Scopus and ESCI—Web of Science databases. Open access (unlimited and free access by readers) increases publicity and promotes more frequent citations, as indicated by several studies. Open access is supported by the authors and their institutes. An Article Processing Charge (APC) of CHF 1000 currently applies to all accepted papers.

The 1st Bayreuth Microplastics Symposium, organized by the Collaborative Research Center "Microplastics" of the University of Bayreuth, was opened by University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible and Prof. Dr. Christian Laforsch, spokesperson of the SFB "Microplastics".

The opening lecture was held by Prof. Dr. Richard Thompson, University of Plymouth/ Great Britain, on the topic "Microplastics in Oceans".

From February 10 to 14, 2020, the five-day PhD-WinterSchool "Plastics in the Environment" of the BMBF research focus "Plastics in the Environment – Sources ● Sinks ● Solutions" took place in Döllnsee, Brandenburg.

The aim of the WinterSchool was to enable the 30 participating PhD candidates to exchange ideas and experiences by presenting and discussing their PhD projects. In addition, the students learned about the latest scientific results and methodological findings of several joint research projects and cross-cutting issues such as microplastics analysis and ecotoxicology. A further focus was placed on strengthening interdisciplinary exchange with the aim of enhancing inter- and transdisciplinary research. To this end, a workshop on science communication was organised, which included modules on inter- and transdisciplinary work.

The WinterSchool included – in addition to the presentations of the participants – workshops, discussion formats, inputs from external experts and an excursion on topics such as consumption and consumer behaviour, circular economy and recycling, as well as inputs and fate of plastics in the environment. In the end, the participants jointly developed policy recommendations that will be published subsequently to the conference.

At the University of Bayreuth, the German Research Foundation (DFG) is to establish a new Collaborative Research Centre (CRC). Its purpose is to investigate the biological effects of microplastics in the environment, including its migration and formation.

During the next four years, more than 30 scientists will examine the processes and mechanisms that

cause biological effects of microplastics in limnic and terrestrial ecosystems,
influence migration of the microplastic particles within and between environmental compartments,
cause the formation of microplastics from macroplastics.

The findings should provide a scientifically sound basis for the evaluation of the environmental risks of microplastics. Using the results of the basic research, new environmentally friendly plastics shall be developed, which have no adverse effects on organisms.

CRC 1357: "MICROPLASTICS – Understanding the mechanisms and processes of biological effects, transport and formation: From model to complex systems as a basis for new solutions"

The new Collaborative Research Centre will be headed by Prof. Dr. Christian Laforsch, Professor for Animal Ecology at the University of Bayreuth. Prof. Dr. Laforsch also coordinates the joint project PLAWES, that investigates the effects of microplastics on ecosystems in the Weser-Wadden Sea system.

Microplastics in technical and natural systems are evident worldwide calling for an in-depth understanding of the implications of these pollutants. Leading scientists studying sources, releases, uptake and toxicity of microplastics alongside with representatives from industry and government did provide context as to how these materials are used today and how they may be regulated in the future.

The conference lasted three days. All presentations were held in plenary sessions and were either talks from invited speakers and presentations selected from the submitted abstracts.
