To tackle the “plastic crisis”, the concept of circular economy has attracted considerable attention over the past years, both by practitioners and scholars alike. Against this background, Linda Mederake, Ecologic Institute, reflects in this opinion paper from a political scientist’s point of view on key issues currently under discussion regarding the implementation of a circular plastics economy. To do so, she covers issues raised at the 2021 edition of the Tutzing Symposion, an annual event organized by DECHEMA, the German Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. These issues include renewable feedstock, life cycle assessments, chemical recycling, appropriate regulatory frameworks, and the allocation of responsibilities to curb plastic pollution. In addition, the paper draws on mainly social scientists’ research to point out limitations of the most common understanding of the circular economy concept which describes the circular economy as a holistic approach that enables eco-economic decoupling and thus prevents ecological collapse while still allowing for economic growth. As a result, Linda Mederake calls for a paradigm shift that challenges this popular, technocratic vision of the circular economy and puts forward sufficiency, i.e., an absolute reduction in production and consumption of plastics, as a prerequisite for the realization of a truly circular plastics economy.

ICRS 2021, also known as the 14th International Coral Reef Symposium, is the primary international conference on coral reef science, conservation and management, bringing together leading scientists, early career researchers, conservationists, ocean experts, policy makers, managers and the public.

ICRS 2021 will be the key event to develop science-based solutions addressing the present and future challenges of coral reefs, which are globally exposed to unprecedented anthropogenic pressures. The five-day program will present the latest scientific findings and ideas, provide a platform to build the essential bridges between coral reef science, conservation, politics, management and the public, and will promote public and political outreach.

The third Dresden Nexus Conference (DNC2020) will be held under the theme “Circular Economy in a Sustainable Society”.
DNC2020 aims to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable economy by focusing on identifying and discussing the concepts that nexus thinking offers to support the transition towards a circular economy. A Nexus Approach shares many synergies with the concept of a circular economy - a system that eliminates waste, keeps resources in use, and contributes to regenerating natural systems. Due to Covid-19 the event will take place online.

In October 2020, the Schader Foundation organizes the 2nd Darmstadt Days of Transformation. During the three days, events will be held in various formats on the topic of transformation.

Important key questions for the Days of Transformation are:

How can transformation processes be initiated?
What inputs must there be from science?
What kind of knowledge is needed to initiate social change processes?
How must we communicate?
How must inter- and transdisciplinary research be structured in order to implement change processes in concrete terms and which stumbling blocks need to be considered?

Applications are invited for conferences, meetings or evening events that fit thematically into this framework. These can be either closed or public events. Further information on how to apply can be found on the event's website.

Transformative research (tF) aims to promote change processes in the direction of sustainable development. Together with actors from business, politics and society, tF seeks possible solutions to concrete societal problems. Together with the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, the Schader Foundation invites scientists, practitioners from industry, non-governmental organisations and other parts of civil society, as well as politicians and representatives of public authorities, to contribute their project experience to this discussion (in German).

The organisers are looking for contributions on the following question: "How do transformative research and transfer projects succeed in formulating the respective goals of sustainable development, in keeping them in view on an ongoing basis, and in backing them up with indicators?

Registration is possible via the event's website. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 01 December 2019.
