PhD-WinterSchool „Plastics in the Environment“

PhD students of the research focus "Plastics in the Environment" are invited to apply for the five-day WinterSchool "Plastics in the Environment", which will take place from 10 to 14 February 2020 in Döllnsee, Brandenburg. The working language will be German.

Objectives

At the WinterSchool, PhD students can

  • receive feedback by presenting and discussing their research,
  • get information on the latest scientific results and methodological findings of the joint research projects and cross-cutting issues,
  • exchange ideas with experts on the subject of "plastics in the environment",
  • develop their skills in interdisciplinary collaboration, and
  • expand their network and exchange information on cross-cutting issues.

Contents

The WinterSchool includes lectures by participants, workshops, discussion forums, inputs from external experts and an excursion on the following topics:

  • Consumption and consumer behaviour
  • Alternatives to plastics in their various applications
  • Circular economy & recycling (incl. waste collection management)
  • Entry points and spreading of plastics in the environment
  • Instruments and measures to reduce plastic inputs
  • Effects of plastics in ecosystems and organisms

In addition to the lectures and discussions, there will be a methodological part in which analytical techniques will be presented and discussed, a workshop on science communication will be offered, as well as sessions on inter- and transdisciplinary work.
Following the WinterSchool, a volume of Extended Abstracts will be published.

Application

PhD students from all disciplines can apply with an abstract on their dissertation project and a letter of motivation to plastiknet@ecologic.eu.

The abstract (max. 300 words) should indicate the topic, question and methodology of the dissertation project. The letter of motivation (max. one page) should include the subject area and the current status of the project, as well as the joint research project within which the dissertation is being carried out. The closing date for applications is 16.08.2019.

Costs

The PhD students have to pay a fee of 100,- Euro (for food and accommodation). Travel costs have to be paid by the students themselves.
