What's the point?
Together with the social enterprise Dopper, Impact Hub is looking for innovative approaches from students for a plastic-free planet and clean drinking water in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Nepal and Germany as part of the Dopper Changemaker Challenge.
Plastics have become an integral part of our everyday lives, and cause many environmental impacts. The pollution microplastics is increasingly in focus. First, these tiny particles were discovered in the oceans, then were found in lakes and rivers and eventually the soil.
The first campaign period of the plastic pirates in 2018 has come to an end. The results of the many school classes and youth groups that participated can now be compared on a digital map of Germany.
A new report by the European Environment Agency (EEA) concludes that products are rarely repaired and reused in the EU. Approaches to transition to a circular economy focus too much on waste treatment in most Member States, instead of earlier phases of a product's life cycle.
Introductory and Networking Meeting „Social and Political Dimensions of Plastics in the Environment“
On March 27, 2018 around 20 social scientists, all being involved in one of the research projects of the BMBF research programme “Plastic in the Environment”, met to network and discuss future possibilities to increase the visibility of the social and political dimensions of plastics in the environment.
Initially developed for the Science Year 2016*17 – Seas and Oceans of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the funding for the youth campaign "Plastic Pirates" has been extended as part of the BMBF’s research focus “Plastic in the Environment”.
Dr. Friederike Gabel (WWU Münster) and Dr. Katrin Wendt-Potthoff (UFZ) invite researchers to submit manuscripts of research articles on plastics in freshwater ecosystems for a special issue in Fundamental and Applied Limnology. Manuscripts should be handed in by the end of July 2018.
Around 50 scientists from 12 collaborative projects of the research focus on plastics in the environment met for a first exchange on sampling, sample preparation and analysis of microplastics at the Water Technology Center (TZW) in Karlsruhe.
